Costs

The basic services of a funeral home, including removing the remains from the place of death, temporary care of the remains prior to cremation, use of the facilities of the funeral home and staff services for a basic arrangement conference, will range from $500 to $2400. The cremation process itself will range from $120 to $395.

Since such a wide variety of services and merchandise are included in the charges of different funeral homes, no direct comparisons should be made without a thorough investigation. When comparing prices ask a consistent set of questions, and be sure to ask about the following:

Cremated remains may be buried in a regular ground burial space, buried in an area set aside for cremated remains, or placed in a niche. Many cemeteries allow cremated remains to be placed in a burial space with the remains of a relative.

A service charge for the placement of the urn will be made, ranging from $60 to $250 depending on the type of placement chosen. An outer burial container may be required. Outer burial containers are normally made of concrete or plastic and usually cost from $75 to $250. Urns to contain the cremated remains range from simple cube shapes of copper or stainless steel to cast bronze statuary to expensive porcelain or cloisonn work. The prices range from $35 to several thousand dollars. Most choices are made in the $150 to $700 range.

For specific cost information it is best to speak directly with an experienced funeral director or cemetery manager.
